What Closures Are Happening at Walt Disney World as a Result of Hurricane Irma?

Q: I’m still debating about going on my Walt Disney World vacation early next week.  What closures are taking place as a result of Hurricane Irma? 

A: For those with plans to visit Walt Disney World this weekend into next week, it is definitely uncertain times. Determining the best course of action in the event of Hurricane Irma is a difficult task given the uncertainty surrounding the storm.  However, for those considering braving the elements and carrying out their travel plans, it is first best to get up to speed on expected closures at Walt Disney World to decide if toughing it out is the best option.  Here’s a list of current Walt Disney World closures happening as of  September 8, 2017.

Hurricane Season Orlando

Magic Kingdom:  The park will close on Saturday, September 9th at 9pm and will remain closed until Monday, September 11, 2017. The evening performance of the Happily Ever After Fireworks on Saturday has been canceled.

Epcot: The park will close on Saturday, September 9th starting at 9pm and will re-open on Tuesday, September 12, 2017.  The Saturday performance of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth has been canceled.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios: The park will close on Saturday, September 9th and will remain closed through Monday, September 11, 2017.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom: The theme park will close on Saturday, September 9th at 7pm and will remain closed through Monday, September 11, 2017.

Disney Springs – The stores at Disney’s downtown shopping district will close on Saturday, September 9th at 9pm and will remain closed through September 11, 2017.

Disney’s Blizzard Beach: This water park is closing tonight (Friday, September 8th) and will remain closed through Monday, September 11, 2017.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon: Unlike Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon will be open on Saturday, September 9th but only until 5pm at which point it will remain closed through Monday, September 11th.

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex: Will close on Saturday, September 9th and will not re-open until September 12, 2017. In addition,  Night of Joy at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has been canceled on Saturday, September 9, 2017.  Request for a full refund for this event will be honored.

Hurricane Closures

Walt Disney World Resorts: 

  • Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground– The resort will be closed beginning on Saturday, September 9th at 2pm.
  • Disney’s Saratoga Springs Treehouse Villas – The villas will be closed beginning Saturday, September 9th beginning at 2pm.

La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil:  The 9pm show on Saturday, September 9th has been canceled.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party: The party has been canceled on Sunday, September 10, 2017.  Guests are invited to exchange their September 10th event tickets for a ticket to another Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, a ticket to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party or a 1-day Magic Your Way Ticket with Park Hopper Option to be used within the next two years.  Guests also have the option of requesting a full refund for the costs of a party ticket.

What happens if I decide to cancel my vacation due to Hurricane Irma?  For those with vacations impacted by the storm, Disney is currently following their Hurricane Policy, meaning that guests have the ability to cancel or reschedule without penalty.  For those opting to reschedule for a different date, please note that differences in pricing may result in an additional balance that needs to be paid off at the time of booking.

I was planning to fly in, will the airport remain open?  No. Orlando International Airport is slated to close on at 5pm on Saturday, September 9, 2017.  As of going to print MCO has not officially announced when they will re-open.  All arrivals and departures during this time have been canceled.  For more information about the closure check out this article.
